Saudi-led coalition conducts limited airstrike on Mukalla port in Yemen

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen carried out a targeted airstrike against two ships docked at the Mukalla port. According to official statements, the vessels had arrived from the UAE port of Fujairah on December 27-28 without prior authorization from the coalition’s Joint Forces Command.

Coalition spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki stated that the ships had offloaded a large cache of weapons and military vehicles intended for the Southern Transitional Council (STC) forces operating in the eastern Yemeni governorates of Hadramaut and Mahra, aiming to exacerbate the ongoing conflict.

"Given the danger and escalation posed by these weapons, which threaten security and stability, the Coalition Air Forces conducted a limited military operation this morning targeting weapons and combat vehicles unloaded from the two ships at the port of al-Mukalla after documenting the violations," al-Maliki said. He emphasized that the strike complied with international humanitarian law and resulted in no collateral damage.

The spokesperson also stressed the coalition’s commitment to reducing tensions in Hadramaut and Mahra, preventing uncoordinated military shipments, and ensuring that all arms transfers are approved by both the legitimate Yemeni government and the coalition.

No immediate response was issued by the UAE regarding the strike. Tensions in Yemen have risen after the STC seized control of Hadramaut and Mahra earlier this month following clashes with government forces. The STC claims that southern regions have long been politically and economically marginalized and continues to push for independence, while Yemeni authorities insist on maintaining the country’s territorial integrity.
